From empirical evidence gathered when my brother was seven: it is NOT a good idea to butter the toast before you put it in the toaster!

Poor child. I understand exactly how she feels. Although I was a good student in elementary and junior high, my science fair projects were always pitiable.

Always hated science projects. The kids who had the amazing stuff (like models of our solar system) were obviously helped by their parents. And those of us without parents willing to help ….had large posters of oak tag and some pitiful drawings in magic markers (of perhaps the solar system). I still cringe 50 years later.

Who knows…she might have a nice explanation of the Maillard reaction.

This could actually be a valid science project. She could talk about the chemical reactions that occur during toasting and why toast tastes different than untoasted bread. Yes, there is science associated with the toasting of bread.

Toast, along with cold cereal, are long-running staples of Peanuts. About the only things kids could cook before microwaves, I guess.

We never had science fairs or science projects when I was in elementary. I always found that odd, because we were considered the teaching hub of the area—we had a school library and special-needs classes, and this was in the mid 1960s when the space programme was all the go. I now realise it’s because all of our teachers were women of a certain age who had been teaching the same things in the same ways for decades and saw no need to change that. They hated the metric system and the new math and the “open classroom” equally.

I was just going to watch a rock for a while…take measurements…and see if it grew. Science Project, extraordinaire.

I absolutely love toast. I used to have it all the time as a kid and still have it for breakfast along with a yogurt.

Several years before this story line, another cast member had to do a science project…!
