Because ‘lol’ is an acronym rather than an initial ism it’s not necessary for it to be in all capitals nor is it a proper noun requiring capitalization. Even if it were capitalized only rarely in the US are common acronyms distinguished by use of periods, and the practice is even rarer outside the US. Case in point, the acronym ‘scuba’.
