I think this silly comment form converts pluses to spaces. Here are three pluses in a row to confirm:

You know, Dragonmaster, you post in this strip many a’ time. Sometimes you repeat exactly what is said, sometimes you spell out the obvious, “enlightening” pig, sometimes, you post vulgar, and quite unfunny comments, and sometimes, you make me want to have a good cry. We comment to make people laugh, to correct Stephen on a few historical mistakes he may have made, squee about favorite characters, ANSWER MATH QUESTIONS CORRECTLY, so be responsible with your posts. If it’s not clever, or funny, please, just read it, and move on.

I learned that stuff in 5th grade and I thought it was really hard, now that I’m about to start 9th grade, I look back and see that it was actually really easy

you know it seems to me that arguing in any forum on the internet let alone a comic strip site…. well its kinda like winning a race in the special olympics, even if you win your still…. well you know where im going… who cares if your offended by what others say grow up and at least try to act as though possess some similance of adulthood

just plug in numbers until you get the right one, in this case 3

X is three. 13 minus 4 is nine. That leaves you with 3x = 9 to get x, you need to divide both by 3.

In algebra, x is not used to multiply. Rather, you use parentheses, a dot, or if you are multiplying (a) variable(s), you can just put them right next to each other.

x=3

13-4 = 9/3 = 3

x = 3

Why the heck did so many people post the answer? It’s 3, that’s obvious, we get it, so at least check to see if anyone else has already posted the answer. Seriously, I see TWELVE non-sarcastic comments that just state the answer and maybe some logic for it and nothing else.

Apparently the only people who commented the answer can’t read or can’t do basic math. If you commented and you did the math, congrats. You can do basic math. But eleven people did it before you. If you can read, why comment the answer you can see in front of you if not to create the illusion of mathematical competence. First pearls strip I’ve ever seen.

As someone who had to take 3 levels of Algebra in High School, I concur with Larry’s statement (except for quitting school to work at a car wash).

I’m 7 1/2 and I figured this out in about three seconds. The value of x is 3.

(13 – 4) : 3 = x = 3. The equation is 3.
