Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for June 10, 2011
Transcript:
Rat: Hey, cartoon boy, there's a word for when a person has to go 'number two' that begins with a 'p.' Can we use it on the comics page or will 'The Man' stop us? Pastis: We can't use it. Rat: Gee, that's strict. Am I allowed to show you the different parts of this model ship I built or is that banned too? Pastis: I don't know what that has to do with your last question, but yeah, of course you can. Rat: Good. That's the poop deck. Pastis: ENOUGH. Pig: A whole deck for that?!

Oddy enough – living by 1911 sensibilities seems normal w/dial up.

wat???

Pig! Don’t look so shocked! Instead, take a few moments to learn some elementary nautical terminology. Rat was clever enough to do so and dupe cartoon-Pastis!

Rat! That was a cr@ppy trick.

Heh. Rat pulls the pun on Pastis.
Ottodesu over 13 years ago
You would think that upon finding out about that whole deck Pig should be as happy as a, err, pig in poop.

Seems like there’s a lot of cr@p in today’s comic pages. Check out today’s Wizard of Id.

I wonder what readers 20 years later will say about what we’re reading now.

Wow, Pastis slipped that one through. Does that mean the censor is non compost mentis?
mabrndt Premium Member over 13 years ago
If true, funny it didn’t make the late George Carlin’s list. It’s more restricted now than it was in 1972??

Rat goes to the ‘head’ of the class.

Come on … Who DIDN’T know what the punch line would be when Rat was speaking in the second panel?
Templo S.U.D. over 13 years ago
Hey, I remember Gary Larson used to use “ass” in a ‘The Far Side’ panel of his. A donkey thinking to himself while reading a newspaper “dumb bunny.” Then a rabbit thinking to himself while watching TV (in the same room as the donkey) “smart ass.” We all know an ass is another word for donkey, but I’m sure the vulgarity for “buttocks” is censored in other comics.
philphan25 over 13 years ago
I guess it could just be called the ship deck.
jakspigot over 13 years ago
if you just look at the first panel and think for a while, you can usually find out the joke.

“Lois, it is called the ‘poop deck.’ That is why I pooped there.” (Peter Griffin, “Family Guy: Stewie Kills Lois”)

Ditto. :-( I wish they would give us at least thumbs-up with or without a thumbs-down button. :-(
George Arnold over 13 years ago
I always wondered why it was called that. Now I know!
bmonk over 13 years ago
I always liked the sound of “futtock shrouds" myself.
nakedfoul over 13 years ago
Stephan is either mistaken or lying here. You can TOTALLY say “poop” in a comic strip.
GROG Premium Member over 13 years ago
And Hart said it in a big way.
Maklarr1000 over 13 years ago
Again with the rebellion! It marches on across the comics page! Or, until we run into “Blondie” and anything edgy vanishes without a trace. I have to hand it to Pastis though, he’s waging a one-man war against a system that hasn’t changed since the 1950’s. It’s his own little crusade, and I’m all for it! Onwards Stephan! Onwards Pearls!

I understood that it was Thomas Crapper, not Harold. But what does fecal matter anyway?
TheWildSow over 13 years ago
“Poop deck” is from the Latin “Puppis,” for the stern of a ship. There’s a constellation called Puppis, which is the stern of Jason’s ship the Argo. Along with Vela, the Sail; Carina, the Keel; and Pyxis, the Compass. Since Puppis is very close to the constellation Canis Major, the Great Dog, I used the think it represented Canis Major’s PUPPIES!
