Rat: I heard you invited some women over for a big dance party last weekend. How'd it go?
Goat: Not well. I don't know what it was. Maybe the music.
Rat: What'd you play?
Goat: Bruce Springsteen's 'Nebraska'. Is crying common at dance parties?
Ah, Goat! Didn’t you listen to the music before throwing the party? Haven’t you heard about Starkweather and Fugate?Geesh. I don’t thing you could find more downer-music if you tried!
“Well, Rat, ‘Nebraska’ seemed like a perfectly good opening song at the time. Excuuuuuuuuuuse me for not knowing the first danged thing about music, or the way the world works in general! Oh, well. Back to the ol’ drawing board!”Aah, don’t feel too bad, Goat. All ideas seem good at the time; it’s really too bad that they only rarely get off the ground! On second thought, maybe it’s just as well anyway!
The Beatles had their “White Album.” I always thought of Nebraska as Springsteen’s “White Trash Album.” Of course he staked a great deal of his career on giving voice to the inarticulate, and what’s wrong with that?

Perhaps his best overall recording. To me, it’s quite underrated.

Actually, nearly any song played exclusively for a whole party would be pretty awful…
