I was on vacation in Hawaii with friends, didn’t know games delayed. I heard the score of a game on the radio. I walked in on my friends and announced the score by way of conversation and found they were watching the game! I was not very popular!
I was reading the first two panels over and over again, trying to spot the setup for a pun. What, Pastis has remembered how to make a non-pun cartoon!?!
Spurs didn’t even play the Warriors last night, they played the Cavaliers. NBA schedules for the whole year are available at the start of the season. I won’t reveal the outcome, though.
I haven’t checked sports info since the weekend and ncaa was down to 4… I ask the coworkers who are talking about basketball if we’re still at four (meaning did I miss a game). they go “no, 16” I’m like “WHAT?” theyre like “oh, youre watching ncaa, this is nba”
This was a lot easier back in the 80s with no internet, nut still hard to do. I remember being on a trip to Hawaii and the Lakers game was on delay because of the three hour difference. It was the NBA finals, and if they won it was over. I managed to avoid TV and radio for those three hours and then I turned on the TV to watch the game. As I was flipping through the channels to find it, there was a Dodger game on, and I stopped for a second to see the score, and up came a graphic congratulating the Lakers for winning the NBA championship. Just pausing on the Dodger game for about 10 seconds was enough to blow it. Whoops.
For those who don’t get it, it’s much more fun to watch a game – especially a game you’re really looking forward to seeing – if you don’t know the outcome. It doesn’t matter if it’s already been played. Same with reading a book, watching a movie, an episode of your favorite TV show, etc. But I guess it’s much easier to think sports fans are just silly, while you binge-watch “The Walking Dead” or desperately try to get tickets to Comic-Con; you know, important stuff like that…
Rat’s action is obviously way over the top, but hey…it’s a comic strip!
Forever known in Blighty as a “Likely Lads scenario” after the episode of the early 70s sitcom where the lads spend the whole afternoon avoiding hearing the England score so they can watch the highlights on TV… that one does end up slightly differently though.
Back in the olde days, when I attended college, even the (then) Pac 10 WSU Cougars couldn’t get their football games on live cable, only delayed cable. At least their games were showed early after the live event, while the Oregon teams had to wait until later in the week. Some dorm-mates who knew I followed the team on the radio asked me if they won, so they could watch the delayed game. They weren’t going to watch if the team didn’t win. What fair-weather fans!
One of the most exciting sports memories I have is watching the USA vs USSR hockey game at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. It was tape delayed until the evening, as it had been played earlier in the day. But with no internet, it was not hard to stay ignorant. Until the break between the 2nd and 3rd periods, when the local news announcer came on and said “Big upset in Olympic Hockey – News at 10!” Grrrr…..
In New Zealand, they often have delayed coverage on TV of All Black rugby games played overseas, when the game is played after midnight our time.
One morning, All Black fans were up at breakfast time to watch a game against the South African Springboks. While they waited for the coverage to start, many of them tuned in to a radio station that wasn’t covering the game or reporting on it. There was a telephone call-in show at the time, but no calls were coming in. The announcer, frustrated, commented, “No-one’s ringing us—you must all be moping about the rugby!”

I don’t like spoilers for fiction, but have never understood why people don’t want spoilers for something that actually happened.

It worked—lots of calls!
