Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for March 15, 2013
Transcript:
Marigold: If we are to attend a unicorn party, you will need some finery. Phoebe: Finery? Marigold: To make you look fine! Phoebe: Mom says I'm fine just the way I am. Marigold: Fine is fine, but fine is finer. And you could some some finening! Phoebe: I'm almost positive you've been making up words lately.

All words are made up, and the best ones come from the mouths of unicorns. True story!

Its all in the choice of font. So will we get to see a magic tailor or will Marigold magic something up? Considering the time of year, I wonder if the mystery involves leprechauns?

Actually it is a word, but it’s spelled “fining.”

Finossification is a rare talent, but so is fininatamation.

I agree with both of you Pheebs could look finer and Marigold does make up words. I hope she gets a nice ball gown and not some kind of crazy Unicorn get up like giving her a blanket and a fake horn and a bridal or some thing. Though that could work too. I hope she gets to have white gloves and opera glasses.

Agreed Phoebe.

Phoebe, one of the wonderful things about the English language is that it is a language of the people. There is no “English Academy” to rule on what is “real English” and what is not. You can make up a word, and if people start using it, it will become “official.” Thousands of words have entered the language that way — and comic strips have contributed hundreds, pow!, zap!

Phoebe, one more thing, English is so democratic that you can spell words any way that you want — but don’t try that at school. Teachers lay down certain rules that you have to follow unless you want to get yourself into trouble. Publishers do the same thing to their contributors — authors, reporters, cartoonists, and so on. The rules may be common ones followed by almost everyone or may be of their own making, but you need to follow them to keep out of trouble (such as getting an F in spellling).

The Naga’s can do what they like, they are cute and ferocious, a combo like that you can get away with murder.

Just discovered this two days ago (I just had to check out something called “Heavenly Nostrils”!). I read the who run backwards to the first strip, and was charmed, entertained, and vastly amused! You’ve gained a permanent reader reader (and my eleven year old daughter!).

Ah another weekend without Marigold & Phoebe being posted. Hope it’s back when I get back from the funeral I’m going to, I think I’m going to need the sweetness of this friendship today.

The Sun is going down on the East coast… I can’t imagine Dana not knowing the strip’s so late, and I can’t imagine her not caring.
