I would imagine that if the tail had taken after Splendid Humility, he would never forgive the fates for allowing that aspect of his appearance to be known.
When, I was small, we always had two or three pets and all our neighbors had pets. We also read books, comics and watched shows, all featuring animal stories. I used to secretly wish I had a tail, too.
I dislike seeing “Phoebe and Her Unicorn” compared to other comics and strips (I especially loathe the ‘wits’ who do so with “Calvin and Hobbes”) as if it were nothing more than an imitation, or as if it were simply a duplication of effort of Dana’s earlier strip “Ozzie and Millie”. But in this instance I’m not comparing, just reminiscing: I always did enjoy Millie’s expression when she was soooo excited her tail would start wagging!
When I was a little (and not so little!) girl I was horse CRAZY. It was also the 50s, prime time for pony tails. One way or the other, I wanted a TAIL! One day, some kind soul sent me as a present a winter hat WITH A TAIL (actually a long tassel hanging off the back)! I was so crazy about it I even wore it in the house, much to my mother’s dismay, tossing my head to flick my tail.
She adapts amazingly well to the situation and shows amazing skill with the tail. Especially if you take in mind she didn have any a couple of minutes ago.

You mean she’s not going to transform even more?
Darn it. I was hoping she would take off her gloves revealing a pair of hooves on her hands.

Aw, it’s only temporary? I kinda wanted to see her turn into a unicorn.

Phoebe’s reaction is charming. Her first thought is to experiment! Wait. What does Marigold mean? What idea? This can’t end well.

And now Phoebe has a ready answer when her parents tell her to “Get your tail over here!”
