We drink from the tap, too. Just remember though, it’s guys our age who started selling the bottled water garbage to the kids so we could make lots of money. I’m cool with helmets, seatbelts and airbags, however.
It is in deed funny to think of how my brother and sister and I used to sleep in the car during long trips when we were 3~5, just laying on the back seat. And it’s not like speeds where any different from now!
In New Orleans, you only drink the tap water if you have a death wish. If you leave a glass of water sitting for half an hour, stuff settles to the bottom! I have one of those filter pitcher things.
And we handled mercury in high school lab. But we definitely got our immunizations from the school nurse or public health department. Our parents remembered losing siblings to scarlet fever, smallpox, and other childhood illnesses. And we were all afraid of polio.
Remember when the back window ledge in those old mercurys was big enough for a child to sleep in? That was my spot on several family trips, and I loved drifting off to sleep while watching the stars through that big back window.

And every day, I walked ten miles to get to school … uphill … in a hurricane … maiming bears with my notebook … in both directions …
It’s funny how that “Drink eight bottles of water a day” recommendation didn’t start circulating until after bottled water came out, isn’t it?
(I still drink water out of the garden hose, btw, and nothing bad ever hap—erk!
