Almost reminds me of elderly Toodles from the movie “Hook”(unbelievable that Tootles literally lost his marbles in Never Land; luckily grown-up Peter Pan returned them to Tootles after returning back to London after finally beating Captain Hook).
I hate to admit this, but after just spent two minutes standing in front of the fridge, trying to remember what I was going to get, I can relate to Earl. I said to myself, I’ll know it when I see it…. I didn’t see it !
I for one often have to turn to my other half in desperation and say, “Have you seen X? I was certain it was here.” It usually turns up somewhere totally different. Like the time I came to the conclusion I must have put my door key into my mouth and swallowed it, since it had disappeared. Called in the reinforcements…and it turned up…in among the clothespins! I’m also notorious for dropping things without knowing: scarves, gloves, bus passes. I bless those who are kind enough to pick them up for me, or at least let me know I’m shedding belongings again.
And there’s nothing worse than me deciding to put something away “for safe keeping.” Kiss it goodbye, we’ll never see it again. Case in point, my mother’s engagement ring. I put it away so safely I never saw it for 8 years, despite repeated searches. Found it quite by accident and we both said, “What is it doing there?”
I’m also very grateful when somebody tells me I’ve dropped something. I would do the same for them if they weren’t aware of it.Some people wouldn’t bother and I could have dropped something very important which I could get into big trouble for losing.
Strangrers could pick it up and get into my personal information.

My mother used to ask, “Where do you remember seeing it last?” That’s a little better.

The only way to find something is (1) stop looking for it & look for something else, or (2) buy a replacement for the lost item. Works every time!
