I am firmly convinced that many times we are our own worst critics and by extension, our own worst enemies.
This is especially true of creative persons. Often, something we’ve consigned to the mental trash heap was actually, really good, while something we consider to be a work of genius is in reality rubbish!

I’m not sure retired exactly maps to “out of business”. To me at least one implies a choice and the other doesn’t.
