I wish my uncle Dave were still alive so I’d ask him about the Korean War in which he served. He was killed by a drunk driver when Dad was about five.

The problem here is that although we remember the VietNam war first hand, the books the grandkids read have it different. My kids have gotten marked down for history that was correct, but not as the book told it.(It happened to me also, in school)

I can understand. History, when I was in school, was a series of unconnected dates (generally battles) to memorize. After graduation, I was working in a small town with nothing to commend it. However, the public library had a nice collection of WW-II books – a period I grew up in. I discovered history as a narrative, our collective memory. Now I am sufficiently a historian to have been published in peer-reviewed publications.

Learned more history after marrying an avid history reader. Schools teach nothing but sound bites, and these are usually one-sided.

My son thought that it was neat that I experienced those things that he was learning about in history. Viet Nam, Kennedy assassination, the 60’s.

Former Sergent First Class, my nepew said something to me that I agree with whole heartly. That he thought war, was a really dum idea.

I didn’t know they even still taught history in schools anymore. After all, they’ve dropped teaching cursive writing. I’m just wondering what’s next to be forgotten about that the kids really should know . . . but aren’t being taught???
