Jo and Gweedo, I found that the CFLs from a few years ago would smoke & stink if I used them with a timer. There are supposedly some out now that can be used with dimmers and timers, but I won’t put one next to my bed or on a timer now.

I am stocking up on incandescent bulbs. LED units are supposed to be better for the environment but they come packaged individually in Styrofoam which defeats the environmental soundness of them. It is more foolishness from the folks who brought you ethanol fuel and a bogus healthcare program. .

Wow, I hate these things……but it is very difficult to find real light bulbs. I wasn’t aware they kill birds…..how awful!! Well the idiots in Washington are making all kinds of horrible mistakes……Vote them out, impeach.

This is a very educational column and thanks to everyone for this info……now if someone could tell me where I can get “real” Thomas Edison light bulbs, I would be forever grateful!!

I hate the CFL bulbs. They take so long to come on. And forget about trying to use them outside in cold weather. The one on my front porch can take as long as 5 minutes to get to full power. I am starting to do some experiments with low voltage DC lighting using LEDs and light bulbs from the auto parts like the 1156 bulb.

The only place I like them is in desk lamps and readinglights because they are cooler and you can use a brighter bulb.o/w I agree with Alcors3!

I use CFBs and LEDs as I can afford them. I’ve had no smoke, etc., problems—-and they last a very long time! Plus they ARE good for the environment, and don’t kill birds any more than our overuse of pesticides and disinfectants plus a host of other stuff we let loose into our own environment.

These bulbs fry my eyes. They are not good in any sense of their design. I prefer the T.A.E. bulbs, too. Lots cheaper, also.

I’m on a fixed income and the cost of the new bulbs makes me chose between haveing light to see or eating. They may last a long time, but if you have to save up for a long time to even buy one, what does it matter. Also, even the small amount of mercury in them requires proper disposal and that costs money. No free recycling places around here. I’ll live in the dark and eat thanks.

I really hate the CFL. I do use them where they will work. I have CFL in the living room, kitchen, hall way and bathroom. I have to use the old bulbs in all out door lights and in the basement. I have 4 foot FL in my bedroom.

New construction should put in low voltage lighting wiring. When we finally figure out a standard voltage,(I suggest 19V, since many chargers are set up for that already, and lower voltage batteries can be charged with it(not like trying to charge 19V with 5V) we can use LED lighting and maybe even use solar or wind electric generation for it.

Bizarre…. because the one that’s just burnt out (ten minutes ago) doesn’t smell at all..We have a few LED bulbs but just can’t get on with the light they give out. One can still buy incandescent bulbs in some shops.

Mercury is reclaimable…. but you’ll need an awful lot of it to make it worth your while.

You might have heard that recently, in the UK there was a curved building with reflective glass that was causing the paint on the cars parked opposite to blister and burn.

bpullin: Eight to ten per year. I’ve told you a million times, stop exaggerating! Franklin was right, don’t choose a stupid bird. Sea birds in Denmark view a windmill array as a solid object and fly around – except for gull and cormorants who fly under the blades and nest on the service platforms..Night Gaunt: There is one on Central Expressway in Dallas that can do it during gridlock.

They’re not expensive to me, I’m always getting free samples in the mail, I’ve never ever bought one.
