1958 would be the Eisenhower administration, wouldn’t it? I know 1988 would have to be G.H.W. Bush. My family once owned encyclopedias that go as far as Reagan.
I used to spend hours reading the ‘World Book Encyclopedia’.I found that it was more informative and entertaining than the ‘Book of Knowledge’ Also, liked ‘Lands and Peoples’ and the ‘Book of Science’ put out by the ‘Grolier Society’ !
Growing up in the 70s-80s, we had an encyclopedia set printed circa 1946. A full half of volume one was dedicated to WWII with all sorts of maps and pictures.
I would kill him. It’s not like he’s going to let go of the 1958 version, you know. Space inside our four walls is at a premium at this time of life. I’m sorry we ever collected anything!
We had the Funk & Wagnalls Encyclopedia that you bought 1 volume at a time at the supermarket. Nowadays you look up stuff on the web and don’t need all those books! ☺
When I’m out of reading material I will pick a volume and browse through it. Mine are 1959 editions but I also got the updates until around 1987 or so.Politically it’s out of date but the rest of the info is reliable and it helped me ID some of the trees in the neighbourhood.

The old encyclopedias were the best … no ”tracking cookies” … no A-V protection … no “Tuesday patches.”To be updated every 30 years !

Well, one set of ours has the only president Johnson as Andrew, and the other set is older.
