I’ve seen people with their faces almost like a bad sunburn from contact with the airbag but also, from the inflating chemical. It’s all better than not having the airbag at all.
Sorry to hear about your nephew..I did say, anecdotally, what I had seen. There are exceptions, which your nephew proves..I learned to drive in the 10, 2 configuration. But I also had a racing instructor who told me, "if you know you are going to hit, slide your hands to the bottom of the wheel and hold on.Fortunately, I have not had to test either on myself..When I first started working, there weren’t airbags, and seatbelts weren’t mandatory. What we saw then were a lot of head/face prints in windshields and knees in the dash. And that was if the driver or occupant wasn’t ejected into a tree or worse..Cars have been made safer.

If you look at current steering wheels, they are designed to encourage 4 & 8 so your arms don’t get broken by the airbags.

reason for those new rules. is that the old method, some folks were getting their thumbs broken due to the airbags inflating.

I always hold the steering wheel at 6 and 9, with my left elbow out the window.
