There used to be a pretty neat sight on US 19-23 in Sam’s Gap, TN. As you came down the winding mountain road, there was a point that you’d see a barn leaning toward the road. It looked like the barn was being held up by the mailbox post. The barn collapsed from snow a couple of years after I-26 was completed through the area.
Mailboxes in rural or small town areas have special hazards. Often the roads are narrow and not lit, so they can get hit by cars. Also, two of my brothers as teens decided it would be fun to put firecrackers in people’s mailboxes. Silly things, they knew it was a very small town, and everybody knows everybody, including their vehicles, even at night, so of course they were caught and had to not only pay for but replace the exploded mailboxes. They didn’t do it again, and I’m happy to say that they grew up to be fine, outstanding men despite this try at a life of crime!

um… why not just get a new post for the mailbox?

I’d be happy to maintain my own mailbox. Up here in The Great White North, we have to walk a mile to fetch our mail from a P.O. Box.
