I went to three different elementary schools (K & 1 in one town, 2 & 3 in another town, 4 & 5 & 6 in the same second town) and none of them were a few blocks’ walking distance from my house.
Mine kids didn’t believe me until I showed them the path I used to follow from home to school and back. Didn’t get to ride a school until ‘Senior’ year in high school when the school was moved to the east edge of town. Only then was I far enough away to ride the bus ! ! !
We didn’t have Jr. High. I walked “10 blocks”, which didn’t quite add up to a mile, so I couldn’t ride my bike. We didn’t have a school bus service. When I graduated 8th grade and started high school, I rode the city bus for four years. Parenthetically, that bus ride cost ten cents each way.
The 2 elementary schools I attended were within easy walking distance. The Jr/Sr. High was long enough the way the bus went to get service, but it was walkable so sometimes I’d walk & I had a friend nearby that we often walked together.
The public school was about six blocks, but dad insisted we go to a church school eight miles away, so we got bused. Then we moved and I got to go to a public school.
Two blocks can equal 2 miles – Just depends on where you live, and what defines a block in your area. The block where my parents live is 1½ miles around, and the high school is at the halfway mark, and you have to go up hills to get there no matter which route you take. I would choose my route depending on my mood. If I wanted to dawdle, I would take the “hidden” route (not much traffic). But if I was in a hurry, I would take the main route because someone usually offered me a ride so I wouldn’t have to walk up the steep hill – The other route’s hill isn’t as steep. There was also the “cut through the neighbors’ yards” route, but that was really frowned upon because it sometimes took you through the woods and swampland.
4th, 5th and 6th grade were almost a mile away and I can show anybody where the school was. They knocked it down two years ago and replaced it with one a bit closer. Kindergarten through 3rd required motor transport as they were different school districts (and homes.)

It was .7 mile and I always thought it at least one or more. Well, it felt like it as there were two long hills coming and going.

So much for “uphill, both ways”.

I rode the school bus thru junior high and then the city bus after that. In true plugger fashion I don’t remember where this is going. ;-)

The school was on top of a hill and our house was on top of another. I walked uphill both ways.

We would give anything to be able to sit with them and listen to their “stories” again. :-)

I rode a bus to school, but it was uphill to the bus stop.
