I almost bought an audio AGC unit a few years ago to deal with the widely varying sound levels in many TV shows. It’s even worse on HD programs with digital audio that have a higher dynamic range, which the producers feel compelled to exploit. Sadly, AGC wouldn’t help when music overpowers the dialog.

Closed captions will save you time from rewinding to hear the mumbled dialogue. They might appear intrusive at first, but you get used to it.

I found the captioning button on my remote. I use it for actors who mumble, accents on the British shows, etc.

Music too, often much louder than the voices. Yes, CC is great.
