My car is a 2001 Dodge and it still runs fine. Doesn’t smoke up the neighborhood either. I would never let a car go without getting it fixed if it started smoking. Don’t think I would ever have bought a Yugo, though.
When I was younger, I was not very diligent about routine maintenance. I had my oil changed at a Jiffy Lube and they showed me how black it was and suggested I add a cleaner to it to burn out the deposits of gunk. I said OK. As I left the shop, driving down a four lane road, I looked in my mirror and I was spewing white smoke that blotted out everything like a James Bond spy car! I turned around and went back (amid the honks of protest) and said “Is it supposed to do that?” They said “Well, your engine WAS really dirty.”
In my world, the plugger husband knows how to repair a car and when to take it to a dependable shop, thus keeping our cars (1970 and 1973) both running smoothly.

he just won’t admit it’s time to trade in the ol’ ’85 Yugo for an ’18 Ford (just thinking aloud of what car comes to mind)

A true Plugger wouldn’t even own a Yugo!

Would a real Plugger own anything but a car made in the good old US of A? ;-)

There ain’t no such thing as a 33 year old Yugo. There are plenty of cars made in 1985 still on the road, but not a Yugo.

Looks as though he and Monk had a similar experience at a rock quarry.
