A few months ago (before the COVID-19), the grocery store called me on my cell phone when I was at church one Sunday before the worship service ever began; had to explain to them that I’ll be there when church is over which they kind of forgot when I wrote down ahead of time when on Sundays I’m available.

Our church always told everyone to silence your cell phone. Almost every service one would go off somewhere.

“Hello Plugger, it’s God. Put that phone away and pay attention to the sermon!” ;D

Not just pluggers. I worked for a dentist and a patient tried to answer her phone with a rubber dam on. That’s after she jumped a foot when in rang and we had a high speed drill in her mouth.

My wife’s church has the following signs on all their doors. “Thou Shalt Turn Off Thy Phones!”

For once, Gary is off base. Speaking on behalf of all Pluggers, we are not stupid and inconsiderate.

most of my congregants, under the age of 30, have their Bible apps on their phones…“Turn to Haggai chapter 2”; results in a flurry of various electronic sounds as the electronically leashed seek the scripture of the day.

Had a cell phone ring in our church once during the Gospel reading about when Jesus was baptized “… and the heavens opened ….” The phone ring was the Flight of the Valkyrie. Everyone laughed, including the Priest who even pulled it into her sermon. The only people not laughing was the guy whose phone rang and his wife.

Pluggers are forgetful. They don’t always remember the rules.

Pluggers think it rude not to reply when someone wants to talk.. Kind of the way it used to be..

We ‘Pluggers’ come from a different time. Turning the phone off wasn’t an option. You either answer it or it keeps ringing until they hang up. It elicits a Pavlovian response.

It is much more likely that the electronically addicted under 30 set would refuse to turn off their phones (or at least the ringer). Pluggers are a lot more likely to be the considerate ones who want to listen to the message. We do have a lot of folks (pluggers included) who use their phone’s bible apps rather than a printed bible, but they are considerate enough to turn off the ringer.

Dear Teresa in Ohio, if this is still happening where you live, than maybe you should consider moving someplace where folks, both young and old, have enough sense after 30 years of cell phones, and the accompanying etiquette of use, to either mute their phone or leave it in the car when appropriate.
