Years ago a co-workers new bride told him, “Honey, as your wife I will clean our home, cook our meals, and raise our babies. Just don’t ask me to plant a garden because I can kill a cactus!” Tru story!
Pluggers believe the pictures in the seed catalogues are real.
Wife bought speciality carrot seeds this year which, in the seed book, looked like spherical tennis-ball sized carrots. What grew was gumdrop sized and they all split. So hard to clean.
On the other side of things, a new house that’s being built in our neighborhood has a huge pile of topsoil in front of it that was delivered about 4 weeks ago, and it’s already covered in thousands of tiny plants.
My garden such as it is, is doing well. The tomatoes and the various pepper plants are growing well and I’m getting a few Anaheim peppers and cherry tomatoes already. The okra has a few pods, but not ready to harvest yet.
This year I put up a greenhouse so I could get things started early. The only thing doing well is a cucumber from a seed I accidently dropped in the mulched floor.
Husband wanted to grow vegetables so when we finally got a house he did. Problem was that the non-profit he worked for would close for half of August plus into start of September (on a school schedule and school here would start the Wednesday after Labor Day).
So whatever he planted would mostly come in while we were away on our vacation. His dad would stop by our house to get the mail, etc. so he told his dad to take whatever vegetables were ripe for him and husband’s mom & sister. This worked well and there would be enough after we were home for us.
His dad died. No one to deal with the vegetables while we were away. No longer plant.

My Dad always had a huge garden when he and I were younger. It was amazing.

Did they use Burpee seeds? Two years in a row, I planted Heavenly Blue morning glory seeds, and some other morning glory varieties came up.

Dad had such a green thumb, seeds would start sprouting before he finished planting; or at least it seemed that way.

I lived in a village where the only time we locked our car doors was to keep people from leaving squash and cukes in the back seat.
