maybe out of admiration for the size of the pile of garbage he must have, wherever he’s been taking it all.
But my little dog hated the garbage man…. with a white hot fury that could never be calmed.
She hated his footsteps, and the sound of the garbage cans being moved….
and almost barked herself hoarse trying to drive him away.
She had an apoplectic fit when she heard the air brakes of his truck outside.
In fact, she’’d bark furiously at air brakes on every school bus until she saw that it wasn’t the garbage truck.
On garbage day, she’d run back and forth from the window to my bed… poking me…. barking…. she could never understand why I just lay there, and tried to sleep…
while our most precious possession was being stolen… STOLEN, I tell you!…. right out there on the street.
Poncho is right. Heroes are tricky things. As much as we may admire them and envy their lives, they do have lives that we don’t see. Those lives are as complicated and messed up as our own, just on a different level, or in a different town.
My family home was far off the street in the middle of a bunch of land. When the garbage truck came in, my Saint Bernard would bark at it and give chase. All of the garbage guys knew he’d wasn’t dangerous because he wasn’t. I’m sure that the new guys would be hazed by being told of the evil killer giant dog who would drag them off the back of the truck. One day, in the dog’s later years, he fell because of his hip problems. The truck stopped, and the guys got me because they were worried about him. I’m sure they grieved for him and his “scary” barks when his giant heart finally failed. Sniff.

Curiously, has Poncho ever met more than one mailman rather than his usual mailman?

The skill & courage that make heroes in times of crisis are often inadequate in daily life.
