We put our dog on his leash and went outside to wait for the mailman. We gave the mailman a couple of our dog’s favorite treats to give to our dog. Our dog now just gives a couple of wufs of recognition when he goes by.
When a truck comes by regularly, such as the Amazon delivery truck, my dog will go look the first time out the window, maybe, and then recognize the sound the next time and know it’s no danger to us. I have never heard her bark or act in any way out of fear or make an attempt to threaten anyone one or protect, other than the one time she saw a possum walk nearby and she just sounded the alarm. When I moved her where she couldn’t see the possum, she was silent again. When the possum returned to where it had been, she sounded the alarm, briefly. That was the only time she did that. Even dogs who bark at her don’t get any response from her, which of course drives them crazy. Squirrels try to get her attention and she just ignores them. But people – she will wag her tail until sometimes I think she might go into flight – even if she doesn’t know them. Yet. Few people can ignore a wagging beagle who isn’t charging at them.

The difference between a rut and a habit is satisfaction with the action.

Actually, I thought it looked like Otto (Pilot) from the movie Airplane.
