I remember when a cure for polio was the #1 goal of the US….and the rest of the world. My boyhood friends were lined up in Iron Lungs on huge porches in my capital city of Jackson, in Mississippi. Now let’s go get cancer!
I remember when the March of Dimes was for polio. Salk developed the vaccine without their help. Hundreds of professional fundraisers without a job. Birth Defects! Nobody will ever cure all of them. Job security. And, if they do, there’s always death to fight against.
Somehow we all believe it is our right to live fourscore years. Some the drug companies spend millions on research for a drug that may or may not be effective. A miracle is found! That’ll be $972 a month, please. We howl! Why can’t it be the good old days 100 years ago when the average life expectancy was 45.

Hmmmm, it’s time-stamped “2002 Universal Picture syndicate” - definitely a Groundhog Day here in New Hapshire!
