    MY elder daughter played the flute. She’s right, those things ARE expensive for a simple metal tube. You expect to pay more for a sax or something complicated and large, but a FLUTE?

    Guess times have changed. We paid $75 each for my brother’s flute and my clarinet. (1958). We each raised a hog to pay for them.

    Well, our parents did it to our grandparents, most of us did it to OUR parents, and then our kids do it to us, ad infinitum…

    Dunno, my school band was pretty good. Probably helped that quite a few of us actually had private teachers…

    Oh, you should see how much effort goes into making most musical instruments.

    the high school band I played in must’a been pretty good. We were the first LA school to officially represent the district (1966). After we marched in the parade, we went to the bowl game. Our director was an Michigan alum. They lost to UCLA.
