My grandparents emigrated from Poland to escape the communist revolution. That’s fine and all, but their kids would come to depend on welfare in one form or another, with only one inheriting the legacy. My aunt was a diabetic alcoholic with a bipolar disorder. My biological mother was schizophrenic. And my uncle suffered from depression that ultimately killed him by train. It is an ironic family legacy that has been repeated many times by other families if you look closely enough at the historical record.

Where I live, “the old country” is Minnesota.
