Mom really made a difficult situation worse by bringing Teena along on this shopping trip. Teena’s not ready and this is going to just make it more painfully obvious.
If you slap that B real, real hard, she’ll land over in sporting goods somewhere and you can all go out for ice cream. Silly things, bras, anyway. Not good for you. Make it hard to breath. Make sag worse. Are expensive. (You could buy more ice cream.) And it’s not like anyone in that family has any need.
Tess’s mistake here, trying to treat both girls the same when they are clearly, not. A little one-on-one time with each would be better. Jeri can have her ‘bra fitting,’ while Teena gets a more appropriate special treat. I’m a middle sister. When I was in fifth grade, my mother left my teen-aged older sister in charge of my younger sister and took me to a high-end department store. At the perfume counter, she helped me choose a very fresh, light scent appropriate for a young lady. Decades later – I still have the empty bottle along with a treasured memory.
On a side note – the first time I got a bra fitting was in preparation for my wedding, at age 24. The store clerk wasn’t quite as tactless as this one, but almost. “I’m afraid we don’t have a cup size small enough,” she said. “You will need to pad whatever we can find.” But, that was in the days before people were putting training bras on eight year olds.

The only saving grace is that if AB hadn’t let that line come out of the fitter’s mouth, there wouldn’t have been a funny punchline…
