I played the flute all through elementary and junior high. I also played the piccolo once in a while. That thing was difficult! I once played it at a band competition… and we won :) This was after my music teacher told me I didn’t have to if I wasn’t confident!
One of the saddest things for me this year is…no school concerts. I especially love going to the “Step Up” concert: all of the strings/orchestra students, from 4th grade to high school seniors, perform. First, each school group (elementary, middle, HS), then the show ends with ALL of them playing a song together. It’s sweet. I love seeing the gradual improvement, from the first year players with “Hot Cross Buns” to the high schoolers playing more complex numbers (one of the songs they were supposed to play this year was “Eleanor Rigby”). Some parents leave as soon as their kid is done; my husband & I love staying for the whole thing, even when our girls were first-year students.
That reminds me of our daughters first dance recital. My youngest (6 at the time) danced with her group to Frank Mills’ “Music Box Dancer”. Every time I hear that song now….
I went to all the concerts but for many of them I had a baby who grew into a toddler and then a rambunctious little boy. I was the lucky one sitting in the hall surrounded by toys and books instead of the auditorium. We could still hear but didn’t have to pay attention, unless it was time for one of his brothers to play and then we’d stand in back.

The first grade is going to whistle? Most of them are missing their front teeth, I hope the first row is wearing raincoats.

A noteworthy performance.
