Sabra IS a nice name. I kind of wish I had known of it when naming my first born.

For years I hated my name. I was told that it was the first name they could come up with; they were expecting a boy. A few years ago I flat-out asked my mother about where my name came from. She told me that it was the title of a book that she loved. My eyes went wide: happily I said, “You named me after Karen Killilea???” You see, I love that book, too. So then, I loved my name…until current events.

“Sabra” is a prickly pear that has lent its name as a term for a native-born Israeli.

My father-in-law’s name was Jasper Newton, and needless to say, he hated it. Then, it turned out that his birth certificate had never been filed, so his mother told him that now was his chance to name himself. He was an adult by that time, and decided to keep it.
