Once a bell is rung, it can’t be un-rung. No such thing as ‘off the record’ in reality. The way of getting around a quote is ‘according to an anonymous source’.
I interviewed my father for a 4th grade project. I wrote that he had to carry a rifle to walk through the woods to get to his bus stop (he still had the rifle at the time). My handwriting was very small. The teacher refused to believe that he had to carry a rifle and insisted that I had misspelled “knife”; she actually put a “k” at the beginning of the word, making it “krifle”. As many times as I tried to explain it to her, she refused to believe it.
