Yes, it does get that hot in Canada. Particularly southern Ontario, which is where the Pattersons are located – we tend to get cold winters and very hot summers. This past July, many days the temperature was over 30 degrees (86 F) and with humidity felt like over 40 degrees (104 F) here.
In my high school we used mechanical babies…looked very much like the real thing from a bit of a distance (some of us got dirty looks on the street for being “teen moms”). They would be set to cry at irregular intervals, for from 5-30 minutes at a time. You would have a key that would have to be held in its back throughout the duration of the crying (which would stop the crying for as long as it was held there, until the baby was finished) to simulate taking care of the baby/soothing him. You would have to take the baby with you everywhere for the time period you had it (usually 3 days) and get up in the night to attend to it…it recorded duration of crying before being attended to and any abuse such as dropping or being hit or kicked, and the teacher would check it after to grade the student. Much more effective than an egg! We also had to do a very similar marriage project as this one, though it was likely even more in-depth. This is in Canada, around 2000. All the high schools in this area have something similar…so for here, at least, this is a common assignment.
It’s Elly…Lynn is the cartoonist, Elly is the character. And like I, and others said yesterday…the occasional night of dressing up and looking good without her husband is not cause to think she’s going to cheat. Should married women attempt to look as awful as possible when they go out on the town so they won’t stray? Perhaps we’re all so weak-willed that the moment another man takes a look at us, we fall into their arms, marriage vows or none?
Amen, AliKzam…I can’t believe what a big deal some people are making of this. Adultery, seriously? Sometimes a woman, especially a married woman with children who rarely gets seen as anything more than Mom, just needs to dress up, go out, and feel good about herself. There is nothing wrong with that, and it doesn’t violate any marriage vows.
This could be good…once Baldo’s gone, nothing will get done and Mr. Rod will realize what an idiot he’s been to let him go! Perhaps he’ll be begging Baldo to come back :P
My kid does the same thing. She also makes her dolly sit on the potty and “pee”, but has no interest in it herself. She’s only 21 months old, but people seem to think I’m negligent for not having her trained already!
Wow, I had no idea that butter tarts were unique to us here in Canada. You learn something new every day!
