In a firehouse there is enough experience to retain institutional memory. Performance matters. When a longtime employee knows he cant just rest on laurels he too will perform better.
Well I am surprised that no one picked up on the real social commentary here. Brad’s firing is the result of stupid unions. The union says fire the last hired! Protect those that have time under their belts. What they should have done was fire the worst performing firefighter! Oh, I forgot you can’t do that because of the unions. God forbid we fore the worst performer and keep someone junior that might just be better!
