All Hallows’ Day was the Christian version of Samhain, the Celts’ festival of the Dead. Samhain was named after the death deity Samana, who also was known as the Grim Reaper. On ancient lunar calendars, these festivals were celebrated on the eve rather than on the day. So, Halloween was the original festival. The Celts felt the Dead and other supernatural creatures walked the earth on the eve and the Celts feared them. So the Celts would dress to look like these creatures so the creatures wouldn’t harm them.
Huey makes a good point about the candy and he knows Halloween was founded by the ancient Celts who viewed dead spirits with fear whereas Huey’s ancestors were comfortably connected with the Spirit World.
