    The only way it would have worked would have been if the government did the same as the Canadians. They had both bills and coins in circulation and finally said the bills will not be made anymore and will no longer be legal tender after a set date. Did the same with the $2 bill/coin. I myself would rather use the coins at that denomination then have a pocket full of $1 and $2 bills (yes, I have both in my wallet at this time and $1 coins in my change).
