   Husband was not willing to leave his job, maybe? Or not to have her job cost the family instead of bringing in income? I already explained about check and daycare. When I was myself working part-time and needed a babysitter for those times, I also calculated it out of my paycheck because that just made calculating of “how much does me working actually add to family’s budget” easier.

   I think that what kab2rb was saying was that it was cheaper for them as a family to lose her salary and not pay for daycare rather than have two salaries and pay for daycare. Obviously when she became a SAHM this does mean “their income was pooled and whatever paid from that”, as she and the kid had to live on husband’s earnings.
