Y’all do realize that in real time this detective is over 100 years old, maybe 120! He became an adult detective around 1933! Looks good for an old geezer!
I have been reading the Complete Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy and have and have read the first 28 volumes, and will get the final one in December. Now THOSE are excellent. Dick Locher was okay, not great but he gave us closure on Big Boy and killed off Moon Maid (sadly). I read those (and have read 1-27 twice) and I am grieved by what I see here. I am sorely tempted to just give up. The present series involves a ridiculous character, and Stooge Villar’s grandson? Great grandson, more like and still too young! Shame the series dying out this way.
One problem with these stories: based on reading almost all of Gould’s work since the beginning, a big difference is that the stories would be driven by Tracy’s personality and commitment. Here we have the story driven by the whim of the cartoonists and other characters. No drive for justice, no emotion at all on his part. He is a cyborg copy of the original.
