When I was growing up the converstation would have ended right after the cereal. Instead of suggesting something else to eat, I would have been told to eat the cereal plain or go hungry.
On the contrary. With shrill cries of “Mommy, I want this! Can I have it for Christmas?!”, it becomes an interesting ploy to get the economy moving. Sooner of later the parents are going to buy something just to get their kids to shut up.
