There are a couple of airlines that do a la cart. I’ve flown them. It was literally $39 for a ticket. one fee for carry ones, another fee for check-in luggage. The seat was uncomfortable at any price (with no upgrade), though for a fee you could get longer leg room. After all was said and done, it was not much cheaper than the other guys.
I suspect that Whitney and much of the higher PCT and JMT are inaccessible due to snow. Heck, the Tioga Pass road (the road to Yosemite from the east side of the Sierra) has yet to open and it employs various snow removal vehicles.
So I guess that the virtual thing is the better choice!
