I’m definitely going to go ahead with the drawing of a week of strips. I’m just waiting to collect four in a row (starting this past Tuesday when I decided to do it) because I want to make sure that any twists (ex: That bald guy may be in the third panel to do some damage in tomorrows strip) are accounted for.
I could probably just go back and pick 7 in a row and go from there, but I kind of like seeing a new strip and wondering how I would have done it.
Dick Tracy may be a hero for a past era, but in an age where CSI is popular and Batman, Superman and heroes of the 30s and 40s are INCREDIBLY popular, it’s a little bit crazy to think that Dick Tracy doesn’t have some place today.
Comic Strips are HURTING today, but they aren’t dead yet. I’m going to redraw the strip to hopefully prove that decent art would be a step forward…
I have a great idea for a Tracy strip in my head. If my art gets a warm reception, I’ll go ahead with it.
Starting tomorrow (or today if I decide to redraw todays strip) I’ll do it and link the results when I’m done. I teach and we are putting on a play at school, so it may be a bit more than a week, but not much more…
The good: The story advances and puts Tracy inside the Casino and we don’t get a day of him in a van recapping or explaining to us what a wire is and where the plan went wrong.
The bad: CLEANERS.
Tracy’s face (as has been said) is not “Tracy”.
Would anybody be interested in this? I propose to redraw each days strip and at the end of the week, I’ll link them or post them somewhere else. Not forever, but for a month or so because the apologists need to see that it can be done better.
I don’t expect brilliance out of a strip that’s well past it’s prime, but I do expect the artist to have some sense of pride and responsibility to the strip.
I would have stayed up all night redrawing that hand in the last panel if THAT is what I arrived at.
He decided, “DONE!”
Not good enough…
Still, glad to rediscover Dick Tracy again and I’m just finishing up Volume 6 of the complete collection. What a difference 60 + years make…
I’ve just gotten back into some of the comics I used to read with my grandfather as a kid (Annie, Gasoline Alley and Dick Tracy) and have to say that while the other two are being handled decently, THIS strip needs help!
What is up in the comics pages when I (former MTV animator and current art teacher) could do a MUCH better Dick Tracy strip. I have 9th graders who hate art who could draw hands like this guy.
I’ll be working on them this weekend. I’ve got grading to do today and tomorrow and Friday I’m doing set design for a play.
I’m just curious to see if people want my best version of Goulds take or if I should put my own spin on things….
