I disagree. I could easily see someone saying “golfball-sized hail”, but I could not see someone saying “ping pong ball-sized hail”. The size is the same, but using something that is hollow to describe hail – even when you are only describing it’s SIZE – just feels wrong. Even though I am only describing size, the listener immediately imagines a substitution. Golf-balls falling from the sky is terrifying. Ping pong balls falling from sky sounds fun.
