Beware of: “You only see what you want to see.” Take a look at a b/w version of today’s strip—to me I see European, Hispanic, Asian, African (with note that not all blacks have direct African heritage), and Mid Eastern representation. About as inclusive a mix as could be made. Kudos to Team Tracy.
I’m with Ooola, and today will be my last visit to this comic. Most of the gags of the past 3 months could have shown up in just about any other sub-par strip.
They might as well rename this strip to “Wonmug”—Oop has been relegated to the minor slapstick sidekick role. I’m about ready to bail…thus far it’s been a very disappointing reboot.
The inter-generational sparring is non-productive and no fun. The reboot is not to my liking—the daily gags are just run-of-the mill, the art is neither distinctive nor consistent. I had hoped for more story, but it seems the days of the comic strip adventure / continuity may have passed. With a wealth of past stories and characters, there was (still is) potential to tap into and meld across generations. Examples: bring back Texas Jack East; Oxy the Moonman; and a non-vilified, but troubled Oscar Boom. (The current Dick Tracy team has shown this approach is feasible.) These examples come from the Hamlin/Graue time frame of 1957-1962 approximately. I challenge the newer readers to refrain from biases, go to ilovecomix and read a few Alley Oop stories from that era. Yes, there will be elements which may not play well today, but those could be excluded or modernized to fit current standards. Then, use comments to offer constructive criticism. Otherwise, all we’ll have left is snarky comments.
