@Stede - LOL. You remind me of a lyric by my old pal Tom Lehrer in the song “It Makes A Fellow Proud to Be A Soldier”

“Our captain has a handicap to cope with, sad to tell. He’s from Georgia, and he doesn’t speak the language very well.”

    Good stuff that.

Pulling a fire alarm would be pretty unimaginative “trouble” for a kid as creative as Calvin. I can think of lots of more interesting things that many of our “modern” school districts would probably go to “RED ALERT” about…

    – Brought transmogrifier “gun” to school (zero tolerance) – Kissed Susy (Sexual Harrassment). – Used his time machine to prove “theory” of evolution. (enraging creationist school districts) – Suggested that he & Hobbes should be allowed to marry. (enraging “traditional family” advocates.) – Caught reading Catcher in the Rye or Lord of the Flies or any number of other frequently banned books. – Asked when Sex Ed would be offered in school (enraging the “abstinence” crowd) – Voicing his opinion that Sarah Palin is “retarded” – Caught utilizing independent thought. (Rather than simply drinking the Kool-Aid and then regurgitating the thoughts, dogma and opinions of others.)

Yep. Throughout much of America, any one of those would probably require activation of the National Guard!

It’s like cooking a frog. The trick is to put the frog in cool water and then slowly heat it up until he’s poached! The frog doesn’t think to hop out because the change in temp is gradual.

But I will concede that in spite of a shoddy, under-funded educational system and a child-age population composed mainly of lazy, brain-dead, video-junkies raised by self-absorbed, absentee parents, that most human children still retain a basic autonomic nervous system slightly more advanced than a frog.

Some days I think that slight evolutionary advantages like that are the only thing holding humanity back from the brink of extinction.

@Patcharchman… “coincidental”, perhaps “improbable” but not “ironic”. Don’t take it personally, Janis Morissette and most of the English speaking world get it wrong too.

For example, it would be “ironic”, if your mistake was made by an english teacher. If that english teacher was named “Huey”, that would be a coincidence.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
