    At least 50 years. I was an academic advisor at Ohio State in 1969. I had 250 students as advisees and 20 of them could not read or sign their names. To get in school they only had to graduate HS. These 20 had done that. To take care of the reading problem the university had created a new English course called “Black English” for students who couldn’t read or write. The new course was a bit hit and there several sections had to be offered to meet the demand.

    Actually, there was no USA until the Constitution was officially ratified by the states. That was in 1789, 235 years ago.

    Huntley & Brinkley and Cronkite were the first 1/2 hour shows at dinner time. The first CBS news was presented by Douglas Edwards for 15 minutes a night before the big stars. That show started in the early 1950s during the Korean war.
