Native of St. Louis, Missour and we always said pe-con, exactly like the three first letters of the noun [not the verb] “convict.” I’ve been cofused by people writing “kahn” when I presume they mean “can” as in “tin can.”

Speaking as a professional copy editor, I think you can go either way.
