    I’m pretty sure that people actually do know that the republic is a democracy but they are being trained to repeat that phrase so that when the government is finally captured by a despot they won’t be able to object.

    I’d agree with most of that…the celebration most likely has indigenous roots that go back a long I think I’d draw the line at claiming a 3000 year history for the Aztecs. I mean Tenochtitlan was founded in the 14th century.

    You seem to be using the phrase “true democracy” as a synonym for “direct democracy”. Direct democracy has never been used for any political entity larger than a city but many forms of representative democracy exist and are generally referred to as “democracies” without having to quibble over the various ways that they differ.
