As far I know, the original joke is from the Gilbert & Sullivan opera “Yeoman of the Guard,” back in the lat 1880s. “Poor Jack Point was good…for nothing!” The Archbishop of Canterbury had him whipped for that joke.
Tell me how the federal government DIDN’T help in the start of building of canals, roads, the railroads, the Interstate Highway system, and the Internet (to name a few) and THEN this cartoon will mean something.
