Sometimes you need government regulation to dismantle monopolies. Unfortunately, our government is too busy being paid off by big telco (thank you Citizens United) to try and actually do something about the monopolies. Net Neutrality is mainly about no fast lanes as opposed to “last mile” or that cable that runs into your house. What no one here has mentioned is that competition is needed here. Yes, I mean government mandated competition. Hard to beat a true monopoly otherwise. (Ma Bell anyone?)
By that logic, we should start with the largest human rights violators and work our way down the list. US or Europe, WWII was not fought because Hitler was a genocidal maniac but because he threatened all of Europe. There were active threats (with an actual army) to those nations. By your logic, we should attack China because of human rights violations. The United States regrettably has little place in “playing policeman” for the world. To do so threatens the sovereignty of other nations and could make an awful lot of enemies. The UN should do the policing. The only way they could do that properly is if most nations give up more of their sovereignty to the UN. It’s not a matter of not being a coward, it’s a matter of diplomacy.
Christie probably has plausible deniability – at least if he has an ounce of sense. It may have been something like – “can you punish that mayor somehow?” “How?” “You decide, but don’t tell me.” If they’re actually able to tie it back to him, he’s not smart enough to be President.
pro-Islam? Really? Your fear of Islam precedes you. I mean I could say another President is pro-Christian and it should have about the same meaning. I am afraid that with you it does not. By saying such things you are wearing your fear/hatred of Muslims on your sleeve. Such fear and hatred is irrational. Few Muslims are terrorists. If you do not hate them, why does it matter if he’s “pro-Islam” or not?
Self-driving cars are coming. (DARPA Grand Challenge?) How long they will take to become popular is another story… All technology can fail no matter how reliable. The idea is to minimize the failures. Computers in cars is not mature tech. Once the tech gets mature, the problems should be minimized. It all takes time though.
I would like to point out that sea levels are rising. Nations have flooded – some to the point that they are looking to migrate. Those who are quick to politicize this as a global warming discussion lack human compassion. Look up the nation of Kiribati.
err I’ve been labeled a pinko commie liberal in some circles (really independent) and I think this strip is right on the money. I for one would welcome more like this than the ones where he constantly tries (usually fails) to lampoon the President. Those are just old and tired at this point.
