I actually think JJ was the absolute right choice for episode 7, but not the rest. He’s really good at expanding ideas, worlds, and initial character development. However, he’s not that great at tieing things up. If he made episode 9, we would be left with 4-5 significant plot points that just got forgotten.
Instead, he laid the groundwork for the next director to work with. The next director gets great characters, significant plot points to expand upon, and a great grounding of the world post original trilogy.
