The Eastern Orthodox churches (Greek, Syrian, etc.) treat the weeks preceding Christmas as an Advent fast. Christmas celebrations start with the midnight liturgy on Christmas Eve and run through either Epiphany or the Baptism of the Lord, rather like the older Western tradition of the twelve days of Christmas.
