This comic makes me a little sad sometimes. Property rights are, in fact, one of the key factors in basic human rights. In a free society, we own the rights to our own labor. These principals have been outlined in countless documents and debates over the centuries but for a fairly recent (and readable) discussion on the topic (with an Australian backdrop) see https://ipa.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/IPA_Review_MAY2015_vol67-2_Property-rights-are-human-rights_WILSON.pdf
I’m no fan of the current direction of the country and the hate, outrage, and ignorance of the rhetoric on all sides is pretty easy to see, however, to claim that we live in more dangerous times isn’t borne out by the evidence. No violent attack is ok, but to be completely safe we must give up a lot of liberty (and not just gun rights). It’s a trade off that we need to be a little more cautious about making, especially when we already live in remarkably safe times, despite media sensationalism telling us otherwise.
EXACTLY my thought when reading this. We seem to have forgotten that we don’t elect a “king”. We elect a president who is “supposed” to have limited powers. Of all the idiotic choices we keep making, giving this one flawed human being more and more power with each successive adminstration may be the scariest of all.
This misconception of everything being a zero sum game leads to a lot of unnecessary misery in the world. In reality, very few things are like this.
